Sword of Light Camp
Sword of Light Camp is the only officially chartered Ordo Templi Orientis body in Ireland. We are based in Dublin City Centre. Our purpose is to offer a social space where people interested in western esotericism can come to attend talks and workshops on a variety of topics relevant to O.T.O. and also including the broader fields of comparative religion, religious history, and esotericism. We do not impose any particular religious beliefs on our event attendees or members, and in general our membership is made up of a wide variety of faiths and spiritual paths.
We are also a first point of contact for people who wish to join O.T.O. which is done by undertaking a series of structured initiations. This is an optional process designed to equip the initiate with universal spiritual and philosophical truths which may benefit their lives as a whole. Many of our event attendees live in and around Dublin, but we also have members and friends throughout the Republic of Ireland.
Counties Fermanagh, Tyrone, Derry, Antrim, Down and Armagh in Northern Ireland are under the jurisdiction of UK Grand Lodge, however individuals in these counties are welcome to attend our events, as are visiting O.T.O. initiates from abroad and people from related organisations.
About Ordo Templi Orientis
O.T.O. stands for ‘Ordo Templi Orientis’. This means ‘the Order of Oriental Templars’ or ‘Order of the Temple of the East’. The O.T.O. is a secret initiatory society. It is ‘secret’ in so far that details of initiatory rituals and initiatory documents are kept secret, and the identity of members is private and confidential. The O.T.O. is a social and fraternal Order. It provides a local and international community, intellectual stimulation, an opportunity to contribute service and knowledge and study practices based on an amalgamation of Classical, medieval and modern philosophy and religion.
O.T.O. is dedicated to the high purpose of securing the liberty of the individual and their advancement in light, wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and power through beauty, courage, and wit, on the foundation of universal brotherhood. The O.T.O. provides a series of initiations which impart universal spiritual truths through the use of allegory and symbolism. The O.T.O. represents the confluence of divergent streams of esoteric knowledge and wisdom, originally divided during the Middle Ages. Based on the Masonic, Rosicrucian and Illuminist traditions of the 18th and 19th centuries, the Crusades of the Knights Templar of the Middle Ages, early Christian Gnosticism and the Pagan Mystery Schools. The symbolism of the O.T.O. contains a reunification of the religious traditions of the West and the East.
The O.T.O was founded at the end of the 19th century by German and Austrian Freemasons Carl Kellner, Heinrich Klein, Franz Hartmann and Theodor Reuss as an 'Academia Masonica' to study all appendant bodies of Freemasonry. By tradition however, the O.T.O. traces its spiritual roots to the foundation of the Order of Knights Templar in 1108 A.D. By 1912, when Aleister Crowley became Grandmaster for Britain, the scope of the organisation had expanded to include the knowledge of the following organisations; The Gnostic Catholic Church, The Order of the Temple, The Order of the Knights of St. John, The Order of the Knights of Malta, The Rosicrucian Order, The Antient and Primitive Rite of Masonry (33 degrees), The Rite of Memphis (97 degrees), The Rite of Mizraim (90 degrees), The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Masonry (33 degrees), The Swedenborgian Rite of Masonry, The Order of the Martinists, and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, among others.
The O.T.O. has since expanded and has thousands of members across six continents (Europe, the Americas, Africa, Australia, Asia). Most countries contain Camps, Oasis, and/or Lodges. These are the three categories of O.T.O. local bodies. You can find a list of worldwide O.T.O. bodies here.
